When a friend is visiting you have the chance to look at your too-familiar borough with fresh new eyes. But what if you just moved in a new country and people from your hometown come visiting you? London is London so I’m not surprised to be meeting more Italian friends here than when I was in Naples. Back in Italy everyone of us was so busy with our everyday life that we didn’t made all the efforts to see each other a lot, but if a friend is coming to London you have to find time to greet him, and it’s always a great chance to feel like you are on vacation as well. This time was Massimiliano Mastellone turn. Among other things, he is a real connoisseur of architecture and design. As a birthday present to himself he came to London to see some of the most impressive projects by  architect Sir John Soane and I suggested we should saw the Geffrye Museum as well.

I don’t remember if I’ve studied Geffrye’s work in Italy but as soon as we moved in Stoke Newington, Paco discovered the presence of this fascinating little museum and the more I read about it the more I knew I was going to love it. From the museum logo, a door keyhole, to the garden, to the voices of the past you can listen to in the period rooms, everything concurs to make it a wonderful place to spend your day off. Apart from the museum itself we were also impressed by the huge amount of information about the planned improvements to the venue and compare them to the way this kind of plans are managed in Italy. We went through “Teenager bedrooms” temporary exhibition, then a not-so-quick look at the shop, ending on a bench in the museum garden looking at the crows hunting worms in the lawns.

After all the drawing rooms I saw at the museum, I joined  Cafè Z for some good coffee, very good music and…my drawing session of the day!

Quando un amico ti viene a trovare ti da la possibilità di guardare il tuo quartiere con occhi nuovi. Ma cosa succede se ci si è appena trasferiti in un nuovo Paese e i tuoi compatrioti ti fanno visita? Londra è Londra, quindi non mi sono certo stupita che di aver rivisto qui tanti amici italiani. In Italia ognuno di noi era così occupato con gli impegni quotidiani che non ci sforzavamo più di tanto per vederci, ma quando un amico viene a Londra si deve trovare il tempo di salutarlo, ed è sempre una bella occasione per sentirsi in vacanza. Questa volta è stato il turno di Massimiliano Mastellone, il quale, tra le altre cose, è un vero intenditore di architettura e design. Per il suo compleanno si è regalato un viaggio a Londra per vedere alcune delle opere dell’architetto Sir John Soane e io ho suggerito che avremmo potuto visitare anche il Geffrye museum.

Non ricordo se ho studiato il lavoro di Geffrye in Italia, ma non appena ci siamo trasferiti a Stoke Newington, Paco ha scoperto la presenza di questo affascinante piccolo museo e più ne leggevo più sapevo che l’avrei amato. A partire dal logo del museo, una serratura, al giardino, alle “voci del passato” che si possono ascoltare nelle stanze d’epoca, tutto concorre a renderlo un posto meraviglioso per trascorrervi una giornata. Oltre al museo, ci ha impressionato molto l’enorme quantità di informazioni sui lavori previsti per l’ampliamento della sede e l’attenzione data alle reazioni e alle proposte dei cittadini. Dopo la mostra temporanea “Teenager bedrooms”, un salto al gift shop e una pausa relax su una panchina nel giardino, guardando i corvi che cacciano i vermicelli nei prati.

Dopo tutte le “drawing rooms” che ho visto al museo, un salto al Café Z per un buon caffè, dell’ottima musica e … la mia sessione di disegno della giornata!
