Mary Cinque
The illusion of Daedalus
Galleria dei Frati
30.03>28.04.2019
Saturday 30th March at 6.30 pm, Mary Cinque’s solo exhibition entitled The illusion of Daedalusopens to the public. Curated by Massimo Bignardi, the exhibition offers a selection of works that the artist created between 2014 and 2016, all focusing on the theme of the “city”: a sequence of individual paintings that alternate with two large picture galleries, conceived as installations that pay homage to painting as a medium that becomes message.
“For Mary Cinque – in Massimo Bignardi words – painting finds in the city an ideal accomplice to its destiny to celebrate the enigma of visibility. This is what is recorded in this cycle of paintings dedicated to urban views, a recurring theme in her work, in which she proposes both the dimension of space and the more complex dimension of the place on the flat dimension of the canvas, of the paper, of the board. […]
The artist takes from Daedalus, the mythological guardian of the arts of architecture and sculpture, the illusory certainty of space by entrusting the latter to the timelessness of the image. She does so by reducing the volumes to flat geometries of colors that design axonometries, in which the architecture, the whole city loses its definition of space, in the Newtonian sense, to rise to an idea of present time and memory of the future. In this sense, the painting becomes a place other than reality, charged with a narrative value that belongs to those who try to tell about being in their own time “.
The exhibition is open until April 28th
