The sound of coffee

19-Feb-2018

We moved to London about a year ago and although time is just a convention, it seems right to write a milestone post. This city has never been a myth for me, as New York is, but it was easy to instantly love it. Maybe because I moved here with my lifelong partner, and this helps to see everything trough rose-tinted glasses. Or maybe because my first job was at the British Museum and, what is even better, in an exhibition dedicated to some of my favourite American artists. Or because we ended up living in East London,  a place where I feel at home, thanks to the mix of cultures and faces that reminds me of my childhood in Ethiopia…

One year has gone and I still take the bus instead of the tube, I still smile for no apparent reason while walking down the street, the rain doesn’t bother me and actually it seems very rare to me, but as soon as the sun shows up I can’t help but going outside. One thing has changed, though, I get more coffee.

I know it’s a paradox, but in Naples I was totally into tea (thanks to Giuseppe & Antonella’s “Qualcosa di té” shop, just around the corner of my house. They were the ones that first helped us to know and appreciate tea, followed by another pair of wonderful people and friends of mine: Rossella & Riccardo); but in London it’s easier to come across coffee shops than tea rooms, and Ethiopia pops up again, ’cause Londoners seem to be very passionate about beans from that area.

On a day off from work I’ll have an americano at some lovely coffee shop and spend the rest of the day wandering and drawing. On a  working day , I make my coffee with Bialetti Moka Express stovetop espresso maker before heading out.

This morning, even if for a brief moment, the sound of the gurgling coffee took me to another place.
