Here you can see a detail of the artwork feautures in this exhibition, entitled “Bunna is ready”, a sentence that you can still hear in my parents’ house when they make coffee (“bunna” in Aramaic). My family lived for several years in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, and we still use some words from Ethiopian language in our everyday life; that’s why, when invited to think about something rooted in our past, I came up with the coffee and everything it means for people in different parts of the world.
My artwork is been inspired by my memories of the coffee cerimony in Ethiopia, by my everyday life in Italy and London, and by my recent sojourns in Los Angeles.
“Bunna is ready” is a study still in progress about all the meanings that the coffee bean carries and the rites associated with its consumption.
In a period in history characterized by great upheavals, from climatic changes to great migrations, Edge ofHistory challenges artists to stop and reflect on our existence and on the future of the world. With this exhibition we invite artists and the public to think about these matters, about their own origins, their traditions and about what will happen to these old traditions and our cultural heritage in the future. In short: what does the future have in store for us? Artists were chosen from different regions and cultures and asked them to enucleate an element that belongs to their tradition and culture, and to project it from the past to the present, and then into the future, asking them to reflect on how it has changed from the past until today, and how it may be expected to change in the future. The participating artists have been asked to make an effort to imagine, to invent, to anticipate the future, because art has a power of foresight that is different from that of science. Edge of History features artists Mary Cinque, Linda Kunik, Geppy Pisanelli, Antonella Masetti, Maidy Morhous, Viviana Rasulo, Catherine Ruane, Richard Slechta and Steph Sydney.
